The title problem is examined in this D&U issue from the anthropological, historical and philosophical perspectives, sometimes mixed together, or from a sightly free perspective of alarmed intellectuals. In some cases the reflections are methodologically loose, and emotional undertones are seen in them. These features show that methods proper for investigating the connections between civilization and religion are not being fixed, just being loomed, meeting obstacles, concerning inter alia objectivity and neutrality, the evaluative insider position of researchers, and regarding the choice of categories founding discourses. However, since the problem of the relation religion-civilization is of enormous importance for mankind, some slight methodical defaults or a deliverance from scientific rigors may be treated as extraneous if they enable us to explore the problem successfully. Besides, some defaults seem to be, in fact, unavoidable attributes of ever discourse on religion.-From the Editors Note, by Małgorzata Czarnocka
